Physical Education

Children need to move! The early years of school represent a significant and exciting time of fine and gross motor development for young children. In K-2 we recognise that children need to move to learn and that health and well-being are directly correlated to good learning outcomes. The goal of physical education at Highfields is to promote physical activity and encourage an active lifestyle. Children have opportunities to move and push themselves physically every day.

Skills, fitness and learning to be a team player are key features of our Physical Education program. Sport lessons introduce a range of skills in a progression, ensuring both motor co-ordination and team building is developed over time, in an environment that fosters positive feelings of success and enjoyment. As well as our specialist sports program, the children in the Prep School participate in weekly fitness activities.

Gymnastics and dance are seamlessly incorporated into the sport program across the year.
Through gymnastics lessons the children practise and explore a wide variety of movements. They are challenged to develop new skills, improve coordination and balance and demonstrate body control. Dance lessons are designed to enable children to communicate and express themselves through both spontaneous and choreographed movements. Dance offers our children a natural crossover between the creative arts, mindfulness and movement.

Friday lunchtime dance is yet another opportunity Highfielders are given to get their bodies moving and their heart rate pumping, all while having lots of fun with friends!
